Wellwater Conspiracy

Wellwater Conspiracy

Brotherhood of Electric:Operational Directives

1999

Review
by Greg Prato
On their second album, 1999's Brotherhood of Electric: Operational Directives, lo-fi masters Wellwater Conspiracy offer another intriguing collection of 60's-tinged ditties. Again, guitarist/bassist John McBain and drummer Matt Cameron are present, but singer Ben Shepherd is not, so Cameron handles the vocal chores this time around (both have very similar singing styles anyway). And despite the defection of Shepherd, the songs are still strong and memorable - all the while rocking and spaced out. Like it's predecessor, 97's Declaration of Conformity, it takes a few listens to fully grasp and comprehend, but once it does, you're hooked. Highlights include the instrumental "Hal McBlaine," as well as "Compellor," "Teen Lamchop," "Born With A Tail," "Red Light Green Light," and the heavy Black Sabbath-riff monger "Van Vanishing." As heard on Brotherhood of Electric, Wellwater Conspiracy continue to specialize in authentic sounds of yesteryear (The Who, The Creation, Pink Floyd, etc.). Highly recommended.

Man Or Astroman?

Astro Launch

1994

Astro Launch is one of many 7" EPs Man or Astro-man? released in 1994.[1] It was released on Estrus Records on clear orange vinyl and black vinyl.[2] As the black vinyl copies are pressed onto translucent black vinyl, some discographies list the vinyl color as "rootbeer" or "clear rootbeer". There are also some copies pressed on opaque gray vinyl. "Transmission from Venus '94" is a re-recording of a song Man or Astro-man? recorded in 1993 and released on a Roger Corman tribute compilation. The back cover states that a secret vocal version of "Philip K. Dick" on cassette can be obtained from Man or Astro-man? for $1. Wiki

Ahhhhhh Intoxica!

Intoxica! Strange and Sleazy Instrumentals From The SoCal Suburbs

Reviews

All Music Guide
Downey Records was a small label run out of the back room of Wenzel's Music Town, a fabled record shop in the sleepy Los Angeles suburb of Downey, CA. While the folks who ran Downey recorded a little bit of everything, the label's heyday came during the glory days of instrumental rock, and this compilation features 26 wordless wonders from their vaults. While "instrumental rock of the early '60s" equals "surf music" to most folks, Brian Nevill's liner notes take great pains to point out that most instrumental bands were inspired by R&B rather than the crashing waves, and some of the stuff here goes in other directions altogether. Give your attention to the Latin jump of "Se Acabó" by the Del Rio Brothers, the slick cover of "Third Man Theme" from Las Vegas lounge outfit Ginny & the Gallions (they also tackle "Hava Nagila" and interpolate the theme from Exodus!), the faux-exotica of "Sound of Mecca" by the Blazers, and the Joe Meek-influenced electronic manipulations of "Space Battle" by Stories in Sound. The best-known cut here is "Comanche" by the Revels, which appeared on the soundtrack to the film Pulp Fiction, and its twanging guitars, honking sax, and vivid atmosphere are in the same league as the other tracks, most of which sound like odd little movies for the mind that you can dance to if you please. Most of these songs are genuine obscurities and six have never been released before, so folks who dig vintage instrumental sounds can add some new wrinkles to their collections with Intoxica!, and pretty much everything included is solid and satisfying.

Just Surf

1998

After two singles that came out in 1995 (Surfin1 with) and 1996 (Sea Storm) and sold out in few weeks, and the two songs (Matador & Sea Storm) included in the compilation called Smells Like Surf Spirit, published by Gee-Dee Music in 1997, Just Surf is the first album ever by the most acclaimed italian instrumental surf band on the road since 1990: Cosmonauti. 1998 - Just Surf is available on white vinyl (180gr. limited edition) & cd. Of their past works the press said: Superb EP. These guys know their reverb from their ravioli alright. - They're gonna be big! Rock on Roma Pipeline Instrumental Review (UK) Not only one of those great sound parties that are seldom heard but also an album bursting with energy that presently has no same-style rivals: Dick Dale & Chuck Berry would be proud of them! Rockerilla (Italy) A half hour of fresh, intelligent musical novelty and healthy escapism. Mucchio (Italy) One of the best surf band around! Bassa Fedeltà Album of the month. Dynamo Continuation of the fantastic trad surf that the band produces. They show that you don1t have to be from Manhattan Beach to play it right! Surf Music Appreciation Society -(USA) Enjoyable tunes,w/ tropical sound & wonderful melodies. Miserable without it! Reverb Central - (USA) Guitar work as thirst-quenching as a Mai-tai drunk on a Cal beach. Just right for gettin a thousand bikini babes swaying and ready for warm summer evening! Solid Sounds In Guitar

1963

THE BLACK ARROWS STORY
There area lot of guitar styled rock and roll groupes around. Nearly every town, the biggest ones as well as the smaller, have their own native favourites. But although a big number of bands try to reach the upper atmospheres of Pop recordland, very few really have gained some kind of nation wide popularity. The reason for this mostly is, that the highest level attainable is determined by the technical possibilities of their amplifiers, echo-units, and more of those electronical instruments and the quality and possibilities of their electrical guitars.
Those three Anthonio brothers (the name seems strange to us, but is not unusual in the country where they come from) completed with their drummer boy Laurens Müller, are not only equiped with the finest instruments and amplifiers But they have a rhythmic and musical feeling that really makes four steady musiciens out of them.
All were born in Indonesia, which country they left in 1949, in the time when the Republic of Indonesia was created. Their position in Holland was not easy. The change in manners, morals, climat and more of those factors were difficult to take and nothing was more natural than a rather shy behaviour and living on their own. lt is also very logical that those facets of their Indonesian life which were still with them, came in the middle of their interest. One was their way of making musie. Those people always see med to have more intensely fun in playing an instrument than we do.
Father Anthonio played the violin, guitar, piano, drums. Mother played piano too. You see: background enough. And the boys really did take over their parents capacities. In 1960 it was decided that the boys would go along together with their good friend the drummer and so the band was born. From that time on, succes was the result of a lot of practising. Every penny they earned was spent on new instruments. In this field mother Anthonio became a very important person because she lent the money for the most necessary things to start with. Within 3 month an remarkable repertoire was known. Every Saturdaynight was goin to be an "action" night. In very few time their reputation went to other towns, and engagements followed each other. In the meantime they had their own headquarters in Amsterdam, a very big fanclub giving dancing parties every Saturday- and Sundaynight. This drew the attention of the record-people and in January 1962 the first disc was out. Eddy Denver, (their singer at that time) and the Black Arrows in Forty Days/Tough enough. More discs followed, instrumental as well as with different vocalists. More and more they became one of the leading groups, hardly able to cope with all the deniand. That was the time, an L. P. was planned. And my personal idea is, that they succeeded in a very delicate, special way.

Great variety of sound. If you don't like every song, that's OK. There will be one or two to grab you by the boo boo.

Review
by Hal Horowitz
An auspicious debut from this N.Y.C. instrumental trio that carves room between Link Wray's, Tom Waits', and Ennio Morricone's spaghetti Western soundtracks. Big Lazy never overwhelms you with their chops. Sometimes ominous, especially when bassist Paul Dugan bows his strings on "Elephant Walk," but more often as tough and wiry as Gary Cooper walking down a deserted Main Street in High Noon. Guitarist Stephen Ulrich's lines spar with the standup bass patterns, creating a throbbing, sometimes experimental hybrid that's neither jazz nor rock but borrows from both. This music invokes glistening wet streets and Sam Spade digging for clues in dives on the seedy side of town. On "Crooked" the sound is pure Waits circa Rain Dogs but nods toward a more frenzied Reverend Horton Heat on the double-time rockabilly-fueled "Princess Nicotine," complete with grunting, unintelligible vocal accompaniment. The title of "Hero Turned Suspect" perfectly captures the schizophrenic quality of their approach, as the sparse, reverbed guitar tangos with upright bass and primitive drums portentously thumping in the background. Big Lazy makes evocative, original music for a non-existent film noir Late Late Show double feature. Spellbinding, innovative, and distinctive.

The All-Nighters
Dance 'till Dawn
2007

Their latest album, entitled "Dance 'till Dawn: Pieces of a Lucid Dream" (released on their own Indie label Acid Moon in 2006) proves to be the bands most ambitous, well produced, and diverse offering yet. Ranging from simpler poppy surf/rock/country inspired numbers, to more mature, epic, adventurous soundscapes, the song styles vary from track to track mimicking the randomness of dreams. Guest cello, slide, and violin players were brought in to add thoughtfullness and depth to certain tracks while others are kept to the straight-up guitar/ bass/ drum set-up. The album is a soulful roller coaster ride of musical stimulation with a sense of variation that will leave listeners moved and intrigued. From CD Baby

Worth Waiting For

Takeshi Terauchi

The World Is Waiting For Terry

1967

By AV+ MLLittle known in the U.S. is Japan’s premier guitar hero, Takeshi Terauchi, affectionately known as Terry. Terry started recording electric guitar (or ‘eleki’) music in the early Sixties. His best recordings in the mid-to-late Sixties were with two different bands: the adorably named Bunnys and Blue Jeans. Generally, the music itself is Ventures inspired instrumentals accented with fuzzed-out whammy bar acrobatics. What makes The Bunnys and Blue Jeans unique is that they were also influenced by traditional Japanese Minyo, that is, very old rural folk songs. Terry recorded many a Minyo with the electric guitar at the helm in place of traditional instruments like the Shamisen.
Terry-san ranks close behind Western contemporaries Link Wray and Davie Allan when it comes to bad-ass guitar riffing. And though finding articles on him in your favorite magazine or finding his records in your local music shop proves a chore, The Bunnys and Blue Jeans have been included on a number of popular compilations, most notably, Pebbles from Around the World, the excellent Planet X GS collection Monster A Go-Go, Guitar Mood, the Hot Nips series, and the Corumbia Sixties Japanese Garage-Psych Sampler

2000

What should I find in my mailbox this morning but a juicy gift from me ol' Uncle Malc. What a way to start the day.

T

The Surf Coasters were formed in 1994 by Shigeo Naka in Tokyo, Japan. Their first appearances were on a "Star Search" type TV show which they won by playing their version of Dick Dale's Pulp Fiction hit" Misirlou". Since then, they have released more than 20 CDs for the Columbia, BMG, and Victor labels, with many appearances on film soundtracks and video games and constant touring in Japan. In 1995, rock guitar legend Dick Dale, known as the King of the Surf Guitar, visited Japan and played shows with The Surf Coasters. He proclaimed Shigeo Naka to be The Prince of the Surf Guitar. Shigeo Naka is a guitar prodigy with amazing fretboard ability. His love is for the twangy, reverbed tones of American surf music, and many Surf Coasters CDs feature reworkings of famed surf songs from the 60s alongside their more orignal material. Live, the Surf Coasters command the stage with an athletic stage presence and a crunchy and fast surf instrumentals.

In The Studio with Redbeard

Grand Funk Railroad

Closer To Home

An interview with Mark Farner mixed with the music and insites into one of my favorite all time albums. Enjoy

T

In the Studio with Redbeard is a North American radio program, produced and hosted by Dallas, Texas based rock and roll disc jockey Redbeard.
The show is a weekly hour-long "rockumentary" interview with music program which looks at the making of many of the greatest albums recorded in rock and roll history, although sometimes it would spotlight the history of rock and roll bands. Redbeard interviews the musicians who created these classic albums.
The show first went on the air nationally the week of June 26, 1988, initially broadcast by sixty rock stations including WXRK/New York, KLOS/Los Angeles, WLUP/Chicago, WMMR/Philadelphia, KTXQ/Dallas, WHJY/Providence, WRIF/Detroit, KRQR/San Francisco, WKLS/Atlanta and distributed by The Album Network through 1999,which grew the network to 180 stations. "In the Studio" is now in its 19th year, distributed by Radio K & G of New York City.

Wax, Board & Woodie - Rare & Unreleased Surf & Hot Rod Songs

1996

Brought to you by Teisco

Review
by Cub Koda
Subtitled "a collection of rare and unreleased surf and hot rod songs," this 14-track compilation hits the intended target in a big way. Culling its contents primarily from the MCA/Dot Records vaults, one of the big tickets here is a bone-chilling unreleased moment when we hear the Surfaris attempting to take on the Rolling Stones with their swipe at "Route 66," way cooler than it sounds. A couple of silly but great fun anyway P.F. Sloan sides, including a unreleased sloppy-as-hell song demo, compliment one-off instrumentals like "El Gato" by the Chandelles and "Tremble" by the Galaxies. And in true Dot Records tradition (the label that made their rep inflicting Pat Boone on an unsuspecting world) there's even a "cover" version on here by a Milt Rogers of Dick Dale's "Let's Go Trippin'"!! Not the most essential set of tunes, but one hell of a fun compilation.

It's A Bit Buggy Out There

Insect Surfers

Death Valley Coastline

1996

Review by Phil Dirt

The long awaited fourth album from the Insect Surfers has finally seen the light of day on CD. The Insects started life in the Washington DC area over a decade ago, where they issued a pair of great records of new wave surf-o-pop, which still find their way onto my playlists from time to time, especially "Dorsal Fin", "Up Periscope," and "VOA." After a move to LA in the late 80's, Dave Arnson formed a new version of the band, with way fewer vocals and a more West Coast / Southwest sound, eventually ending up with no vocals at all. The Insect sound today is not classic surf by any stretch of the imagination, with Dan Sullivan 's Flying V and the smooth distorto guitars only slightly reverbed and their ever present Southwest mystique. Their now impossible to find (except on vinyl) third album "Reverb Sun" is a stellar disc, and their third of the "Summer Surf" CD is equally grand. They have issued a 10 inch vinyl mini-album with a few of these tracks called "East-West" which also ncluded two tracks from "Summer Surf" not on the CD. The rest of this album as been circulating on cassette since then, until now, when it is finally out on CD. The lineup is the classic dueling twin leads of Dave Arnson and Dan Sullivan , Dan Vallenti on bass (now with the Boardwalkers ) and Jeff Utterback on drums, now in the Tiki Tones . "Mig Alley," "Razorback," and "Re-Entry" sport Mike O'Neill on bass, and Steve Birdowski (ex-Jon & the Nightriders) on drums. Picks: Tiger Shark, Razorback, Psychotronic, Third Stone, Diamondback, Walking Distance, Bengazi, Stingray, Ocean Maid, Re-Entry, Volcano Juice, Huntington Beer Dance, 77 Gaza Strip, Mig Alley

Hieronymus Bosch

Havin' Fun, Soundin' Good

2004

*WHAT THEY SOUND LIKE* Heralded as musical historians by Steve O'Rourke, The Bosch claims The Pixies and Frank Black, Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker, the Ventures, Link Wray, Man... or Astroman?, and The Gun Club as significant influences. In other words, it's a furious and melodic mixture of surf, garage, and punk rock.

*PERSONNEL* THE BOSCH, smarmy surf rockers extraordinaire, claim the two most prominent Williamsburgs as their home. Originally hailing from Williamsburg, Virginia, erudite and visionary guitarist MATT HARRISON and super-charged sociopath HOLT RICHARDSON met in their tedious years at a tiny white-bread private high school. After they developed a disturbingly telepathic musical rapport, they began a professional affair with the Sound of Music in Richmond, Virginia, and more specifically, with engineer Jonathan Demaio, who, when not touring with Southern Culture on the Skids and other top-notch Southern bands, has cut "The Bosch Sound" onto analog tape on many occasions. In the past few months, The Bosch has been fortunate enough to admit two new players into the fold. ANDREW RAFF, a legal eagle, tickler of ivory keys and blower of hot and cool on the tenor sax, means the music up real good. BRETT BEYER, darling of the Williamsburg loft-party scene, frequenter of his own custom-built darkroom, and all around hipster extraordinaire, recently joined The Bosch as four-stringer. Holt and Matt are wringin' their hands, eagerly anticipating Brett's successful sneakin' of The Bosch tunes into the most magnificently coiffed circles of hipsterdom.

*CRED AND LIVE SHOW* The Bosch boys, having sexed-up audiences with their surf rock and twang, have begun seeing the fruits of their labours: substantial airplay for their latest release, "Havin Fun Soundin Good," as well as a residency at the Lower East Side's Luna Lounge, keeping alive the dream of a future filled with champagne, cocaine, and the chance to hunt whales in a hovercraft. The Bosch has won the annual battle of the bands competition at the College of William and Mary, booty-rocked the bulk of downtown New York clubs, and helped many unwed mothers get their start. The Bosch only desire a few things: to electrify the stage with gluteousmaximusshakinus tunes, and perhaps cause you to crack a smile, or at least break a sweat. The most poetic thing they'd ask of their fans is to ponder their place in a world of violence and lust. The Bosch perspire and strain, jump and howl, bump and grind, armed frequently with go-go dancers and always with total recall of Steve Martin's routines and the film UHF. You can't lose. Give the Bosch a chance to rock the joint and no one will leave unhappy.
