BIOGRAPHY
Huevos Rancheros formed in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in 1990. Original members of the instrumental rock & roll-type group were bassist Graham Evans, guitarist Brent J. Cooper, and a drummer by the name of Rich E. Evans, who later deserted the lineup and bassist Tommy Kennedy stepped in to replace him. Over the next decade, Huevos Rancheros would record a long list of singles, music videos, and several albums. The band's music earned it not only a large and loyal fan following, but acknowledgments from both MuchMusic and the Juno Awards. During the first struggling years of its existence, Huevos Rancheros recorded a six-song offering, Rocket to Nowhere, released on both cassette and vinyl. A heavy performing schedule in and around Calgary promoted the EP and began to build the group a sizeable fan base. In 1993, the debut full-length album, Endsville, was recorded under the C/Z label. Huevos Rancheros stepped up their presence in the music world at the same time, with both singles and videos, and exposure throughout Canada and into Europe, Asia, the United States, and other countries. In 1995, an impressive sophomore album, Dig in Mint, was released on Mint Records. The group's singles received heavy airplay on radio stations, while their music videos earned as much attention on both MuchMusic in Canada and MTV in the United States. A year later, Evans left and was replaced by Kennedy, just before a third album, Get Outta Dodge, was finished. The group's work on that album won them a Best Independent Video award from MuchMusic, and a Juno nomination for Best Alternative Album. Within a couple more years, the band's popularity spread into new countries, like Switzerland and Italy

Despite a successful career under his own name, the true legacy of actor/comedian Bill Dana remains Jose Jiminez, a character introduced on The Steve Allen Show which went on to become one of the most beloved comic creations of the era.Born William Szathmary in Quincy, Massachusetts on October 5, 1924, Dana began his career as a writer after a severe back injury temporarily derailed his performing aspirations. After creating gags for the likes of George Gobel and Don Adams throughout the first half of the 1950s, in 1956 he joined the staff of The Steve Allen Show, where his backstage impression of a Latin-American character named Jose Jiminez so impressed host Allen that Dana was invited to appear as Jose on the program's 1959 Christmas special. The sketch proved immediately popular with audiences, and soon Dana graduated from the writing staff to the role of featured performer; although he created a number of characters of varying ethnic backgrounds, the naive, good-natured Jose — complete with the trademark opening line "My name...Jose Jiminez — remained the program's consensus favorite.Given that Dana himself was of Hungarian Jewish descent, there was considerable controversy over the perceived stereotyping of his characterization, but in actuality Jose Jiminez was about not ethnic humor so much as satirizing American culture on the whole. Dana made his recording debut in 1960 with My Name...Jose Jiminez, an album split between clips from The Steve Allen Show and a sketch built around a press conference. Following his success on television and on record, Dana graduated to nightclubs; his first shows at San Francisco's famed Hungry i club formed the basis for 1961's Jose Jiminez the Astronaut, which lampooned the current American fascination with the space race. When the record became a favorite on the grounds of NASA's Cape Canaveral, it received considerable media attention, and when "The Astronaut" routine was eventually issued as a single, it reached the Top 20.After the record's success, subsequent LPs placed Jose in similarly outlandish situations; Jose Jiminez the Submarine Officer reprised routines from The Steve Allen Show and The Spike Jones Show, while 1962's Jose Jiminez in Orbit returned the character to the space program. After a flurry of releases including 1962's Jose Jiminez Talks to Teenagers of All Ages and the following year's Our Secret Weapon and Jose Jiminez in Hollywood, he received his own sitcom, The Bill Dana Show, in 1963. The program, which cast Jose as a hotel bellhop, ran through 1965, at which point it was clear its star wanted to move on to new projects; the 1964 LP Bill Dana in Las Vegas, while featuring some Jose material, also included routines not performed from the character's perspective.As the Jose Jiminez craze gradually ceased, Dana largely receded from view, signing on as a producer and occasional performer for the last few seasons of The Milton Berle Show during the mid-1960s. He returned in 1970 with the album Hoo Hah! Direct From Noshville, a parody of the series Hee Haw steeped in his Jewish background. For the next several decades, Dana focused primarily on writing and directing, making a number of guest appearances in television and film roles and occasionally dragging Jose Jiminez out of mothballs; after the 1991 compilation The Best of Jose Jiminez, Dana returned to the studio to record a collection of all-new material titled Jose Can You See.

About The Ghastly Ones

The Ghastly Ones emerged from the grave to haunt the SoCal surf and Garage scene in the fall of 1996. Hailing from Van Nuys, California these swingin' undertakers took their inspiration from the hopped up sounds of early sixties surf and hotrod outfits like The Lively Ones, Avengers VI, The New Dimensions, and the Fender IV and mixed it with their obsession with late night monster movies, Halloween records and Screaming Lord Sutch to patent their "spooky surf" sound. In 1997 The Ghastly Ones recorded their debut album "A-Haunting we will Go-Go", which was released world-wide by Geffen Records. They toured with the Brian Setzer Orchestra and Southern Culture on the Skids and even composed and recorded music for the Halloween episode of the ever popular cartoon show, SpongeBob Squarepants! Now that's pretty spooky! After an extended hiatus, The Ghastly Ones returned to haunt the airwaves with a 10 song EP of rare and unreleased tracks titled "All Plastic Assembly Kit". When it comes to consistency, Ted Leo is the man. When it comes to writing songs bristling with nervy energy and sincere conviction that inspire, question, and reflect, there are only a few of his peers that can really measure up. Living with the Living marks full-length number five for Leo and his crew of Pharmacists, and it's another literate and stirring collection of songs built around his sweetly elastic voice and tightly wound guitars. On personal and human levels, he hits it all — anger, happiness, frustration, love, uncertainty, hope, sadness, rebellion — in songs that burst with passion and a true zest for being alive; cuts like the bright immediacy of "The Sons of Cain" and the tender Irish-flavored frolic of "A Bottle of Buckie" find Leo in top form and easily put a smile on one's face. Bitter political assertions surface like usual, yet nothing in Leo's career thus far hits quite as hard as the acerbically blunt rant of "Bomb.Repeat.Bomb." Brazen, in-your-face and stretched to the seams with seething defiance, Leo basically barks a giant fuck you to the government. It's all upfront danger and burning emotion when he spits, "Oh sure, you could mobilize a million troops...but then people start to ask questions/So when you drop in out of the white clouds in a blue sky/Don't worry about them having to see the whites of your blue eyes." The anxious pace and shout-singing make the song a definite standout, and though there are other tracks present to further vary things a bit — the dub-inflected "The Unwanted Things," the slow-paced poignancy of "The Toro and the Toreador" — the one fault (if you can find one at all with him) is that Leo has basically been writing the same album for the last few years. All excellent albums with stellar songs, but really, there's not much sonically to separate his records (or his pretty straightforward, by-now almost formulaic songs) out from one another. Plenty of Living with the Living measures up with his best, so it's really hard to knock such a likable guy who obviously knows his strengths and can consistently execute great songs — sentimental and motivating, socially conscious and challenging, Leo hardly falters. Yet although his mixture of politics, heart and intelligence with taut guitars and a sweet falsetto will presumably be engaging forever (and Leo hits much more than he ever misses), it's getting hard to ignore that little voice inside that wants something more from him. Something a bit different that stretches his songwriting further and shows that he's really trying to push himself. There's no denying his talent, and five winning albums is still a hell of a streak. But Ted, we know you've got more in you.

When US actor and designer beer salesman Jim Belushi was recently in Australia he took time out to sit in with one of this city`s favourite blues and soul combos, The Mighty Reapers. Belushi had been tipped off back in the US by Dan Ackroyd, as presenter Jake Elwood of the nationally syndicated "House Of Blues" radio programme who had been featuring the Mighty Reapers album released in the US on Terra Nova Records. The Mighty Reapers were formed by "Continental" Robert Susz out of the ashes of the Dynamic Hepnotics back in 1988.

The Hepnotics had shot to the top of the Australian charts with "Soul Kind Of Feeling", the biggest selling Australian single in 1985, and the most broadcast single on Australian radio in 1986. Since then The Mighty Reapers have been in constant demand for festival and club dates throughout Australia and when international blues and R&B artists come to town it`s more than often that the Reapers are chosen to support or back them. This list of luminaries includes B.B.King, Margie Evans, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lucky Peterson, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Bobby Radcliff, Hubert Sumlin and Mojo Buford, Lonnie Mack, Johnny Copeland, Little Charlie and the Nightcats, Big Jay McNeely, Louisiana Red and Billy Branch, Buddy Guy, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Albert King, John Hammond, John King Cleary, Joe Louis Walker, Billy Boy Arnold, The Holmes Brothers and many, many more.

With the release of their most recent album "The Hurt Is On", the Reapers have now released some four albums in their own right as well as their highly acclaimed collaboration with US blues and soul diva Margie Evans. In Australia you can find the Reapers on Rufus Records with whom they have built a long and very successful association. In the USA the Californian based Terra Nova label has released all the Reapers' albums and they have received extensive airplay on college and public radio. Over the years the band have drawn on the rich tradition of blues, soul and R&B in their choice of covers from artists such as Howlin' Wolf, James Brown and Sonny Boy Williamson. However the band have always relied more on their original material when it comes to filling the dance floor. Their latest album "The Hurt Is On" features only one cover and no less than nine originals form the considerable songwriting talents of Robert Susz, Dave Brewer and Clayton Doley.

Lemme Take You to the Beach is a lovingly assembled tribute to Frank Zappa put together by the folks on the Cowabunga Internet mailing list. This collection works on so many levels it's almost ridiculous, from the tunes themselves to the perfectly parodied cover art. As hardcore Zappa fans know, he was involved in producing a number of surf and novelty singles before the Mothers were formed (compiled on the Cucamonga compilation), and surfy elements continued to surface in some of the early Mothers work. Many of the Mothers' early songs could easily be arranged as surf instros, but some of the participants really got creative with the project and went for some unexpected song choices. Tracks like "Lumpy Gravy" and "The Orange County Lumber Truck" or the songs from Cruising With Ruben & the Jets would seem like obvious choices, but who would have ever thought "Jewish Princess" or "We Are Not Alone" would work in this context? (They do!!) "Aybe Sea" is another interesting choice that comes off really well, and what surf band in its right mind would even think of attempting "G-Spot Tornado"?? Well, the answer is the Invisible Birds, and they do a great job with it. "Baby Snakes" is utterly transformed by Don's Mobile Barbers by slowing it way down and putting it in a minor key. "Zoot Allures" isn't a surf tune, and it isn't treated as one here, but the Foolz sure do a nice job with it. "Peaches en Regalia" is also very well done, as is the version of "King Kong," with some monstrous fuzz bass and Dada madness at the end. "You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here" slips inexplicably into Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" for a moment, but it's a moment Frank probably would have found pretty amusing (Zappa's own work was rife with stolen musical quotes). The title track is the only one with any vocals to speak of, but its inclusion was almost mandatory given the project. Lemme Take You to the Beach is a fun record that would be great for fans of that surfy sound who are looking for something a little more adventurous than "Wipe Out," and it will certainly please Zappa fans. Well done.

The L.A.-based Blue Hawaiians formed in 1994 when bassist/vocalist Mark Fontana, guitarists Mark Sproull and Bron Tieman, and drummer Tom Maxwell did a favor for a friend by playing at the opening of her new nightclub, the Lava Lounge. Both the group and the club became favorites with L.A. hipsters, as they combined retro exotica with a seedy, slightly dark edge, and director Quentin Tarantino was one of the band's earliest fans. The Hawaiians added to their kitsch-noir mystique by claiming to be Wayne Newton's backing band, moonlighting on some L.A. gigs; it took a year for their true identity to be discovered. By that time the group was a fixture at venues like the Viper Room, the Roxy, the Wild Cat, the Derby, and the Hollywood Palladium, playing shows on their own and with artists such as the Brian Setzer Orchestra and the Ventures. By 1995, the Blue Hawaiians were also developing the studio side of their band, appearing on the Del-Fi collection Pulp Surfin'. The following year they appeared on the label's Shots in the Dark compilation, and by 1997 recorded Live at the Lava Lounge. The group recorded their first full-length studio album, Sway, in 1998, and released their major-label debut Savage Night the next year with new guitarist Gary Brandin and keyboardist Eric Godal. Along with playing live and recording, the Blue Hawaiians also appeared in the BBC documentary History of Rock & Roll and in PBS's retelling of surf icon Mickey Dora's life, In Search of da Cat.

Live at the Lava Lounge is a modest fireball of hipster cover tunes performed by the swingers of the surf torch, the Blue Hawaiians. Earning points for authenticity, the quartet members pay tribute to the likes of Jerry Cole and Lee Hazlewood, but they'll frequently pepper things up with wild cards like the jazz staple "Caravan," Lionel Hampton's "Red Top," and even a pulped-up version of "Jockey Full of Bourbon" by Tom Waits. Dreamy slide guitar shorelines segue to inner-city Thunderbirds in the endless pursuit of cool. Mark Fontana's crooning on a couple of these tracks (notably "A Cheat") throws a sort of David Lynch haze over the ears. Initially, this style of music seldom lends itself to any performances of wild abandon, but the musicians all take turns sneaking a little extra heat onto the stage over the course of the hour, until the band is so warmed up that the chairs have started to melt. The call and response of "Jet Black" clicks out an edgy switchblade tango, and "Jack the Ripper" is a cross between a gang rumble on the pier and Gidget with a whip. Any hints at crime noir along the way finally get their cover blown by the explosive "Dick Tracy" theme, a fall over backwards finale to a show that has steadily grown in energy and aggression. For a live set it's a great recording, and there's no denying the solid musicianship and energy. Equally important is that everyone — on-stage and off — was having a good time.

In a crowded field, toaster Jah Woosh left his mark on the roots age with a string of popular singles and a series of seminal albums. Born Neville Beckford in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1952, Haile Selassie's 1966 state visit to the island prompted his conversion to Rastafarianism. Prince Lloyd's Sound System made an equal musical impact, and provided a launching pad for Beckford's career. Teaming up with friend Reggae George as Neville & George, the pair famously failed auditions for both Coxsone Dodd and Duke Reid, bringing the partnership to a swift end. George Bell, however sent the newly christened Jah Woosh into the studio in 1972, although "Morwell Rock" never gained a proper release. However, "Angela Davis" and "Mr. Buyer" arrived on 45 the following year. The single caused a few ripples, 1974's "Magnet Scorcher", created a few more, but it was when the toaster joined forces with Rupie Edwards that his career took off. His 1974 eponymous album was a smash, rising to the top of the Jamaican chart, and wowing reggae fans in the UK as well. Invariably, producers were now keen to record the toaster, and a slew of singles flooded forth. The DJ also tried his hand at self-production, with the Dreadlocks Affair album giving proof of his talent. The Dudley Swabey produced Psalms of Wisdom and Leonard Chin overseen Chalice Blaze both appeared in 1976 as well. All three sets were hits, and featured such smash singles as "Ital Feast", "Dreadlocks Affair", "Shimmy Skank" and "Natty Baldhead". Woosh's self-produced Religious Dread set included another clutch - "Chant Freedom" and "Marcus Say" amongst them, with 1978's Gathering Israel album merely the icing on the cake. A split set with I-Roy, We Chat You Rock, was also recorded during this period. The DJ cut crucial singles for other producers too, including Keith Hudson and Lloyd Campbell. "I'm Alright" and "Love Jah & Live" were the 45s that clicked in the UK, but it was Woosh's albums that established his reputation there. Blaze kindled the most excitement, and led to his first UK tour. Further visits brought Woosh into Adrian Sherwood's orbit, and he joined Singers & Players, while Creation Rebel oversaw 1979's Marijuana Wold Tour album. The DJ Legend set, meanwhile, rounded up many of Woosh's crucial recordings from this era. The '80s were less kind to the toaster, and his output notably slowed, with only a trio of albums released. Instead, Woosh turned his attention to production. He oversaw the Bim Sherman Meets Horace Andy & U Black split set, as well as the Prince Jammy v King Tubby - His Majesty's Dub collection, and co-produced Larry Marshall's Throw Mi Corn album. His final production, in 1985, was Fight on My Own, a set from old friend Reggae George. Despairing of the new digital sounds running rife through the sound systems, Woosh withdrew entirely from the Jamaican and UK scene. Emigrating to Ghana the toasting producer threw himself whole-heartedly into west African music. In recent years, however, Woosh has re-emerged to oversee re-releases of his back catalogue.

The legend of garage music in Greece.

The LAST DRIVE released the first LP back in the early eighties. The track MISIRLOU is powerfull surf instro and very similar to the AGENT ORANGE cover. The song was first performed by the Michalis Patrinos rebetiko band in Athens, Greece in 1927. The leader of LAST DRIVE Alexis Kalofolias today continious play music with the band EARTHBOUND.

The BLUE JEANS were formed back in 1984 by Alex Berekos initially as a four piece band playing mostly covers.. After two years of constant gigging they are offered their first deal to release an E.P. for the "Wipe Out" recording label that is released in 1986. The E.P. features two original songs plus a cover of the instrumental surf tune ''WIPE OUT'' today this release is considered a collector's item. The Alex Berekos was formed the next band - the only authentic surf band in Greece- INVISIBLE SURFERS in 1992. They released their first 7 inch, in 1996, titled "It Won't Last Forever" & first LP, "Dogs Killa Cat," in 2002 The track AKIS PANOU is the name of greece popular folk songwriter Akis Panou.

"Red Rocketship" is the studio collaboration between drummer/studio engineer Adam Weiss, from Washington DC, and songwriter/producer Theron Day from Bel Air, MD. The two have recently completed 2 instrumental albums of production/library music titled "Homunculus" and "Plasticity EP". Aimed for Film, Television, and Video Games, this collaboration contains an eclectic mixture of high-energy instrumental rock, alternative, tension builders, hip hop, electronic, and modern synth pieces. On a recent note, the songs "Eternity" and "The Golden Boy" from the "Homonculus" album were recently featured on MTV's Real World-Sydney and Real World-Las Vegas this summer.

Alice Cooper wasted little time following up the breakthrough success of Love It to Death with another album released the same year, Killer. Again, producer Bob Ezrin was on board and helps the group solidify their heavy rock (yet wide-ranging) style even further. The band's stage show dealt with the macabre, and such disturbing tracks as "Dead Babies" and the title track fit in perfectly. Other songs were even more exceptional, such as the perennial barnstorming concert standard "Under My Wheels," the melodic yet gritty "Be My Lover," and the tribute to their fallen friend Jim Morrison, "Desperado." The long and winding "Halo of Flies" correctly hinted that the band would be tackling more complex song structures on future albums, while "You Drive Me Nervous" and "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" showed that Alice Cooper hadn't completely abandoned their early garage rock direction. With Killer, they became one of the world's top rock bands and concert attractions; it rewarded them as being among the most notorious and misunderstood entertainers, thoroughly despised by grownups.

Alice Cooper's third album, Love It to Death, can be pinpointed as the release when everything began to come together for the band. Their first couple of albums (Pretties for You and Easy Action) were both largely psychedelic/acid rock affairs and bore little comparison to the band's eventual rip-roaring, teenage-anthem direction. The main reason for the quintet's change was that the eventually legendary producer Bob Ezrin was on board for the first time and helped the Coopers focus their songwriting and sound, while they also perfected their trashy, violent, and theatrical stage show and image. One of the band's most instantly identifiable anthems, "I'm Eighteen," was what made the album a hit, as well as another classic, "Is It My Body." But like Alice Cooper's other albums from the early '70s, it was an incredibly consistent listen from beginning to end. The garage rocker "Caught in a Dream" as well as the ass-kicking "Long Way to Go" and a pair of epics — the Doors-esque "Black Juju" and the eerie "Ballad of Dwight Fry" — showed that Alice was easily in league with other high-energy Detroit bands of the era (MC5, Stooges). Love It to Death was the first of a string of classic releases from the original Alice Cooper group.

Alice Cooper's second studio album, EASY ACTION was released in 1970, when the band was living in California and signed to Frank Zappa's Warner Bros.-distributed Straight Records. Full of influences from Bowie to Zappa and the Who to Jefferson Airplane, the LP is an adventurous rock 'n roll tour de force produced by David Briggs, best known for his work with Neil Young. While it reaped no chart success, it became a legendary fan favorite, with many considering it a lost classic (the group's next album, 1971's Love It To Death, came after they moved to Detroit, and sent them on their road to multiplatinum superstardom).

"Is that a pistol in your pocket big boy or are you happy to see me" asks Mr Cooper. Recorded before a ragbag of fans at Los Angeles' legendary Whiskey A Go Go club in 1969 this record is a ragbag of staccato songs whipped up and crunched off without rhyme or reason. One wonders if Alice Cooper's personal finances might be in such a state that Warner's been okayed to peddle this second rate recording of a middling show. The songs are lashed off in one and two minute intervals, making them count more as song-ellas than worthy full-length creations. 'No Longer Umpire', 'Changing Arranging' and 'BB On Mars' don't after all tell us a whole deal about the band's ageing process. The praise with which the album has been received in some quarters puzzles, though the recording does deserves full points for obscurity alone.At times the music sounds not unlike Beatles outtakes from the time: Alice Cooper and Paul McCartney are contemporaries. Though the fact has been obscured by make-up there's no escaping shared pop-rock sensibilities. It's eccentricity and garish wrapping make the album a supermarket standout but one wonders what motivates sunset strip rock stars produce such obscurities. Pension cheques surely.

A Tribute to Morricone's Spaghetti Western Themes

Ennio Morricone reinvented western movie music with his score for A Fistful of Dollars [Un Pugno di Dollari] in 1964. He discarded the symphonic and the noble (lush strings and brass) and brought in the folkloric and the grotesque: whistling, choral shouting, dissonant harmonica, lonesome trumpet, Jew's harp, ocarina, chimes. Most importantly - to those of us raised on rock and roll - he brought in the gnarly electric guitar.
It was a sonic revolution that enabled director Sergio Leone to transform the western's visuals and script. With music strong enough to carry scenes without dialog, wide vistas and extreme closeups (the eyes of a duelist filling the screen) replaced talking heads. The talkative and well-scrubbed hero gave way to the taciturn and dusty anti-hero. As Leone himself put it: "If it is true that I have created a new-style Western, with picaresque people placed in epic situations, then it is the music of Ennio which has made them talk." Morricone's music made stars of Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef.
Four hundred soundtracks (of all genres) later, Morricone sometimes bristles at being best known for his early westerns. He lectures interviewers that "le note per i film 'pistoleri' sono una minima parte dell mia produzione [the scores for the 'gunfighter' films are a minimal part of my productions]" and specifically that "the Westerns I worked on, others as well as Leone's, account for just 8% of my productions." (In raw numbers, westerns comprise about 36 of his more than 400 soundtracks.) He recently told the alt-rock magazine Magnet that he considers A Fistful of Dollars "the worst Western of Leone's career and the worst of my music."
All the same, Fistful and his subsequent pistolero soundtracks are unmatched in popularity and enduring influence. Some five hundred European westerns were made on the heels of Leone's, most with scores styled after Morricone's. Leone's The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly [Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo] and Once Upon a Time in the West [C'era Una Volta il West] are the only Morricone-scored films among the 100 favorite movies of all time, as rated by the users of the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com). When a music critic calls an artist or song "Morricone-influenced," the reference is to the maestro's western music, particularly for GBU and OUaTitW, not to his work for horror, sexploitation, romance, or gangster films.
The world first noticed Morricone's music because it plays such a prominent role in the Leone films. Leone's biographer, Christopher Frayling, explained to interviewer Cenk Kiral: "Leone and Morricone told me that the music for the last twenty minutes of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly was recorded in advance. So, the reason the cemetery scene is so beautifully choreographed, so well cut, is because it was actually done to the music. And the same for the duel scene. They were walking in time with the music. It's shot like a rock video."
How fitting, then, to offer an instrumental rock-and-roll tribute to the Morricone western scores. Bands around the world, from surf to heavy metal to avant-garde, love the music's imaginative tones and unforgettable melodies. Many have covered individual EM western themes. A few bands have even specialized in the spaghetti western style, including the The Hellbenders, Di Dollari, and In the West (the latter two making their recorded debuts on this disc). Million Dollar Records has released two excellent compilations of bands playing spaghetti-styled original tunes, "Spaghetti: Duck you Sucker" and "Spaghetti II: The Revenge".
For this tribute, we sought all new recordings. We found a remarkably talented set of bands eager to participate. Many have roots in "surf music", the style of guitar instrumentals associated with the Southern California teen beach culture of the early 1960s. In a curious way they are here following Morricone's own progression from beach sand to desert sand. One of the first movies Morricone scored, before any westerns, was an Italian teen beach movie, 1962's Eighteen in the Sun [Diciottenni al Sole].
A year before Fistful, Morricone had written a Hollywood-style score for an Italian-made western, Gunfight at Red Sands [Duello nel Texas]. He wrote another for Guns Don't Argue [Le Pistole non Discutono], a higher-budget film with which Fistful of Dollars was shot in tandem to save money. While Guns Don't Argue had a catchy theme (energetically played by The Penetrators here), Leone wanted a different sound.
At Leone's request, Morricone arranged the main Fistful theme with elements (whip cracks, bells, hammers, flutes, vocal chorus, and electric guitar) that he had previously used on a 1962 folk-pop single (for Peter Tevis, who was the vocalist on Gunfight at Red Sands and Guns Don't Argue, singing Woody Guthrie's "Pastures of Plenty"). Possible influences on the decision to feature electric guitar are many. The American Duane Eddy had famously recorded western themes on his trademark "twangy" guitar in the late 1950s. British instrumental bands the Shadows and the Outlaws followed suit in the early ë60s. We don't know whether any of those recordings ever reached Morricone. The British composer John Barry had featured the distinctive guitar work of Vic Flick on his soundtracks for Beat Girl (1960) and the James Bond films (1962-on), but any direct influence is likewise unknown. Looking for specific inspirations is probably pointless: by 1964 the electric guitar was everywhere in popular music.
We have it from several reliable sources that the principal guitar heard on Fistful was a Fender Stratocaster played by Alessandro Alessandroni, a remarkable musician who was also the celebrated whistler and director of the vocal chorus that Morricone repeatedly used. On subsequent soundtracks (For a Few Dollars More [Per Qualche Dollaro in Piú]; GBU; OUaTitW) the principal guitarist was Bruno Battisti D'Amario, possibly on a Jazzmaster. Both guitarists are still active today.
Morricone (as quoted by Frayling) explains that he sought to match his music to Leone's characters: "Certain characters in his films, the bad ones in particular, are very Italian, and even very Roman. But with Stetsons on their heads. Nothing to do with American history, really, and to underline the irony and craziness of these Italian characters, I created an ëItalian' sound." With that lineage in mind, we are proud to have Italy's two top surf/instro bands, the Bradipos IV and Cosmonauti, performing the title themes from A Fistful of Dollars and its sequel, For A Few Dollars More. Both play con molto spirito.
In scoring some three dozen Italian westerns, Morricone did not endlessly mimic the Fistful formula. His scores fall roughly into three groups, matching three sub-types of westerns: violent dramas about vengeance-seekers or bounty hunters; comedies about frontier bumpkins; and fables about Mexican revolutionaries. Perhaps because their more urgent melodies are best suited to guitars, all of the artists in this tribute chose themes from the first group, and the majority chose from the four best-known scores for Leone films.

Cooper, lead guitarist for Huevos Rancheros, rocks up a suspenseful piece from For a Few Dollars More: "Sixty Seconds To What?". Sweden's surf/western combo The Langhorns (pronounced "Longhorns"?) bring out the drama in a gundown number from that movie, "The Vice Of Killing".
The Atlantics, a stunningly creative Australian band from the 1960s who regrouped in 1999, rise to the challenge of Morricone's best known (and most often covered) theme, the main title to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. 3 Balls of Fire, a trio from the actual American southwest, veer in an unexpectedly exotic direction with the music ("The Extacy of Gold") to that movie's above-mentioned scene where the character Tuco (Eli Wallach) runs through a cemetery on his way to buried treasure.
Morricone scored four westerns directed (and two purportedly co-directed) by Leone, but eight for the prolific Sergio Corbucci. Three of the best Corbucci themes are reinterpreted here. The wailing guitars of Pollo del Mar reconfigure Navajo Joe, theme to the best movie Burt Reynolds has ever made. A sample of the original's screaming chorus was used to great effect in the 1999 film Election. The Hellbenders bring interweaving guitars to the distinctive music (originally arranged for jazzy trumpet) of the dark western they named themselves after, The Hellbenders [I Crudeli]. Australian guitarist Kim Humphreys brings new urgency to the haunting melody of The Great Silence [Il Grande Silenzio]. This critically acclaimed snowbound western (at long last (legally) available in the USA with its recent DVD release) takes the taciturn hired gun archetype to its logical conclusion: a violent act has left the title character mute.
Completists will want to know that one other guitar-band cover of a Morricone / Corbucci theme is available: the theme from The Mercenary can be found on a recent collection of rare tracks by the legendary Ventures, In the Vaults, Vol. 1. Two other directors makes our collection. The Bambi Molesters tackle the title theme to Ducio Tessari's A Gun for Ringo [Una Pistola per Ringo], while the Irreversible Slacks provide a swanky reading of the gnarly theme to Sergio Sollima's The Big Gundown [La Resa dei Conti].
Our collection of Morricone compositions concludes with three tunes from Leone's most ambitious western, and Morricone's most Hollywood-like western score, "Once Upon a Time in the West". The trio In the West, recorded live, take a soulful approach to the bittersweet title theme. Morricone himself played the tune on church organ at Sergio Leone's funeral. The movie's awesome showdown theme, "As a Judgment [Come una Sentenza]", is taken over the top by a special collaboration between Los Angeles guitarists Bernard Yin (from the bands The MiGs and Sex with Lurch) and David Arnson (from the Insect Surfers). We appropriately bid farewell to Ennio with Di Dollari's nuanced take on the ambling "Farewell to Cheyenne," named for a bandit portrayed by Jason Robards. As a special bonus track, guitar legend Davie Allan offers a Morricone-inspired original tune, "The Loud, the Loose and the Savage", previously unreleased.
Without a doubt, the focus on guitars in this collection fails to mirror the varied instrumentation of Morricone's original arrangements. But holding up a mirror would have been pointless when everyone can (and should) listen to the original soundtracks. They not only remain in print, but wonderfully expanded editions keep arriving. (By the way, although some of the other westerns that Morricone scored are a chore to watch, I highly recommend all the movies represented here.) The objective of this collection is to pay homage to the great melodies, mostly by showing how they rock.
Well, I could go on, but it's time for the music to start. One must heed the words of Tuco: "When it's time to shoot, shoot! Don't talk!"
