I like it all. Each of the tracks hit some of my favorite sounds and grooves. Made my reverb happy bone go all tingly. Words hardly fit for these guys. Definitely worth the time to grab this disc.

On this CD compilation NPR records presents the cream of the German Surf scene. Feat.: The Orgaphonics, Surfpatrouille, Leopold Kraus Wellenkapelle, Way Out West, Los Twang Marvels, Achtung Rakete, Stronzo Gelantino & The Boo-Men, The Razorblades, The Sidemen, The Kilaueas, Cave 4, Robert & The Roboters, Pozor Vlak, Commando, Birke Maier Trio, The Cruncher. "Herbert Hooke, aka The Cruncher, assembled this monster compilation for NPR Records with two tracks apiece from 15 current German guitar bands. Unfortunately that left room for only one track from The Cruncher himself, but with his new album due in the summer we won´t have to wait long for more inspired reverb surfers like In My Chair. Yes, in the hands of a master the Status Quo hit does work as a surf guitar instrumental. The other contributors to Krautsurf share Herbert´s love of genuine reverb surf sounds in varying degrees. Although not as it is in America, it seems the term surf music has a broadening definition in Germany. Still, with 31 tracks and a CD-busting 78 minutes there´s plenty here to make this a desirable collection and the following tracks that surf fans can approach with some confidence. - Leopold Kraus Wellenkapelle´s Draussen Am Grossen Riff has a repetitive guitar motif underpinned by cheesy organ but explodes into life with ist driving surf chorus. - The Razorblade´s Longboard Queen is a melodic twang rocker but Headshaker nods in the direction of surf with ist slides and staccato picking. - Surfpatrouille´s Eskalator has an expressive lead with distortion effects. Slot Car Racer buzzes with fuzzed up reverb in a modern take on traditional surf. - The Orgaphonic´s Hot Rod is a fine pre-surf style rocker driven by damped echo picking. Sunset Rider an atmospheric ballad with slide and tremelo used to good effect – sounds a little like Blue Hotel. - The Kilaueas – Two fine selections from their excellent Professor Volcanova CD (see Pipeline 6). Tunguska Blast! surfs up a traditional East European theme while Stranded is a great surf ballad in traditional ´60s style with damped picking, tremolo and reverb to the fore. - The Cruncher´s In My Chair succeeds due to ist fine guitar sounds. - Pozor Vlak´s Crazy Krüger is a catchy, pre-surf style rocker - Cave 4 – Boulevard Patrol bubbles along but comes to life with ist crashing chords. Hot Ride is a more relentless and more rewarding rocker. - Way Out West´s Motorhula slips and slides around over a ska rhythm. Evolution simply drips fabulous reverb guitar over everything – a wonderfully moody slowie. - The Sidemen – I´m a sucker for The Persuaders theme and a splash of surf from The Sidemen adds a fascitanting new twist for this little gem of a track. Havanna is an exotic slow roller. - Birke Maier Trio´s Banzai Oranke is a rather piecemeal reconstruction of old surf references but the band show they can cut it by twisting up Baja. I´ve focussed on the surf tracks as, let´s face it, people who don´t like surf are simply not going to by an album titled Krautsurf. But that´s not to dismiss the others as there are some fine none-surf instrumentals on board too. Achtung Rakete have an excellent original in the Euro styled Ojo Misiles, as do Robert & The Roboters with Der Sonne Entgegen, and Los Twang! Marvels knock out a stirring Carioca plus their own Rancho Cucamonga. There´s plenty of surf here captain, but not all as we know it." (Pipeline 71)

Here is one from the first year of Trustar Vibrations. Always a great one.

Opening with the sectionalist anthem "Frogs Can't Surf," Canada's Mark Brodie & the Beaver Patrol go on to double-pick their way through a varied, authentic, and fun instrumental surf album.
Captured with a bare minimum of studio effects, Mark Brodie et al come across with the spontaneous energy of a live show, but with a clarity of sound not often heard live or on old surf records. The packaging is very 60s, and borrows from the "Living Stereo" logos used on classical and experimental electronic recordings at that time, offering an interesting speculation about what those Chantays records could have sounded like if they, too, had been utilizing the breakthrough stereophonic technology of the early 60s. The Beaver Patrol make no attempt to update the surf sound, and attack the genre with reverence rather than modernist irony used by other contemporary surfers like Man or Astroman. Still, even with the trademark reverb, double-picking, and guitaar runs used as break beats, the the album is remarkably good: a wide variety of tempos differentiates the 16 songs, the occasional toy organ brings other 60s garage styles to mind (the Pacific Northwest's Kingsmen and Wailers, in particular), and all the musicians display great talent for surf music. The percussion on tracks like "Theme From the Old West" is especially deft and original. For fans of Dick Dale et al, The Shores of Hell sits very comfortably next to the original masters of the genre. It is a rare piece of nostalgia that manages to transcend its derivative origins and add flesh to old bones. Tim Mohr

Bill Epps and Rich Campbell formed The Vara-Tones in 1961. They are one of the original surf groups that were around when the first wave started. They were most active between '63-'65, during the height of the surf-instro craze. Over thirty years later they have returned as revitalized granddads of a genre that has been experiencing tremendous growth and renewed interest from all outlets of the media, including an entirely new and very hip fan base. Yes, another group has risen out of the ashes to reclaim their territory. This is a wonderful time to be making music. The world has never been more open to new and different sounds. Although this sound is not new and familiar to some, it never really got the recognition and opportunity that its now experiencing. There is no one that deserves the accolades and fame more than the guys that were there in the beginning. Listen up all you youngsters out there, want to play surf-instro the way it was meant to be played? The Vara-Tones hold a clinic for eager ears that are willing to learn. They have successfully re-ignited their original sound with the help of today's technologies and equipment. The base sound is still there, it just has a little more oomph now (as Phil Dirt says). The original hit "Repeto" (1964), has been given a shot of new life with an upbeat rockin' flavor and a new title, "Repeto 2000." You get the best of both worlds, as the group plays the original as well the updated version. Speaking of the best of both worlds...When many original surf groups reform and make their music combined with today's sound, it comes out sounding so much stronger, with a new fullness and freshness to it. What was once a mere ripple from a recording standpoint, is now a Tsunami headed your way to give you the ride of your life. It all sounds that much better now because of the enhanced and improved sound quality and sonics. The latin, island flavored tunes are immensely effective. "El Sereno" and "Midnight In Mazatlan", are as picturesque and inviting as the beaches that are envisioned inside your head while listening. Welcome back Vara-Tones. The surf-instro community needs more groups like you to reform and to remind people from whence they came. Mandolin, fretless bass, theremin, and an unmistakable Police influence all coexist here. Produced for Pascal Records by David Pascal who also produced the similar-sounding Blue Hawaiians. Twelve originals are included with interesting cover versions of the Hollies "Bus Stop" and Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence."

The Sir Finks are an Austin, TX-based surf revival trio, comprised of members Mike Guerrero on guitar, Damien Llanes on drums, and Jason Gentry on bass and sax. Formed in the mid-'90s, the Sir Finks have issued a few full-length recordings for the independent surf-based Wildebeest Records label, Devil's Agent and Instrumentals in the Key of Boss!, as well as contributing the odd track to compilations, including a tribute to Memphis soul instrumentals titled Chinese Checkers, surf re-workings of songs originally played by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, Surfin' Senorita, plus a four-song collaboration with Italy's I Cosmonauti, titled Guitars Don't Argue.

"Weird Beard"

"Weird Beard" is an ultra reverbed super chunk stomp, utilizing a simple progression that gets into your noggin and stays there. Somewhat monster movie-ish, and very fun.

"Heads Up"

This is a right honest delivery of "Heads Up," also known as "Shootin' The Pier." It's Freddie King composition. Much chunkier and more restrained than the original or the Lively Ones' retitled version, this retains the soul and adds ultra reverb.

"Mondragora"

This is a pretty chunky traditionally styled surf jam, mid tempo and infectious. The trad progression styled melody line, damped plucks, and definite surf tweaked structure provide ample interest and wet rhythms.

"Knights of the Long Board"

Groovy percussion, percussive surf guitar, extreme damped reverb, and a delightful riff driven by the infectious rhythm. "Knights of the Long Board" is a very cool tune, with lots of chunk and pure surf tone. I couldn't get this outta my head... excellent!

"The Ulrich"

"The Ulrich" is a delightfully playful piece, percussive and infectious, and very spunky. Mike Guerrero knows how to use damped reverb to it's fullest. In some ways, this can be compared to a speeded up Fireballs tune. Very fine.

"Double Buck"

Mexican village stomp, cowboy prancing, and surf reverb... this is a mighty fin tune, a border surfed masterpiece. Entirely cool, very infectious, and totally fun. Yee-haw!

"Penny Dance"

Cowboy dance hall prancery, with that quiet reverb and playful rhythm. "Penny Dance" speaks of innocent fun, a polka band, and gussied up country folks. Even the subdued chorus brings cheer. Excellent!

"The Ballad of Mike Fink"

"The Ballad of Mike Fink" is a splendid light weight stomp, a tale of guitaristry and chunk. Mike's plucking is just too fun, and the perfect blend of drums and bass keep it afloat on a sea of airborne flying fish. Very infectious.

"Moon's Theme"

Outstanding picking, suave percussion, solid bass, and a magnificent arrangement. The Farfisa underneath is subtle and adds to the ambiance. "Moon's Theme" is a splendid track, bouncy and infectious, and slightly dangerous, with spiffy whammy.

"Heartful Of Soul"

This is a full fuzz attack on the Yardbirds' grand and moody "Heartful Of Soul." I wonder why no one has done this before, it seems so obvious. Nasty and yet very fun.

"Action Reef"

"Action Reef" is a bluesy number with a chunky backtrack, and a familiar rhythm. The cool chops and infectious rhythm drive this one home. It may be a bit derivative, but it's just too much fun to pass up.

"Lost Wahini"

Almost laughing playfulness, chunky froth, pretty girl search music. Very enjoyable, infectious, and utterly cool. Wahine or haole girl, it makes no difference... it's just too fun.

"Jack the Ripper"

Big whammy chords, extreme damped surf guitar rhythm, tribal drums, moody bass... you know the drill. The thing is, this very different, like a speeded up variation on the Surfaris' version, but with the rhythm guitar out from and the whammy subdued, creating a new image for a well worn Link Wray classic. Excellent.

The Papaya King's debut disc is a surf monster. It is loaded with flair and power, solid writing, and exceptionally good playing. There are no dogs on the disc, and no relaxation either. Solid top to bottom. It also sports one of the best CD titles of the year! "Green Dodge Dart (with three chicks in the back)" (track 14) is a live vocal with pure surf backing and rockabilly vocal stylings, and a sense of the kinda tune that appeared in the soundtrack to Back To The Beach. This is a strong CD.

With twanging guitars, Hawaiian shirts, and song titles like “Chop Suey Rock” and “Thrilla in Manila,” Robert Johnson & Punchdrunks are a formidable orgy in kitsch. Their main influence is naturally surf music in the style of Dick Dale and Wray Link, but the fiery stage performance holds more in common with Rev Horton Heat and definitely Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Formed as a trio in 1992, they included drummer Ed Johnson, bassist Thorsell, and front figure and guitarist Robert Johnson, who had earlier played with the garage band the Bottle-Ups. Robert Johnson & Punchdrunks played live for the first time in Stockholm in 1993, and when the movie Pulp Fiction was released in 1994, the revival of surf rock that followed boosted the interest for the band considerably. In 1995 they released their debut album, Beavershot - Live at Studion, on their own label, Nilroy, and the next year saw the album Feels Like Buzz Aldrin getting great reviews by some of Sweden’s most influential critics. This probably meant more gigs the coming years, but building on kitsch and playing instrumental music effectively prevented Robert Johnson & Punchdrunks from getting a big audience. After the inclusion of bassist Ögren, the band released Aloha in Havana and went on tour with Bob Hund.

Robert Johnson And Punchdrunks formed in 1992 with influences from early sixties instrumental music and roots in the Swedish "garagerock" (where you can find bands like The Nomads and others). Robert, or Robban as we call him, used to play in the legendary The Bottle-Ups, a band that was linked together with the rest of the garagebands, but had considerably more in common with Link Wray and Dick "Pulp Fiction" Dale.

The first gig ever was at the Pet Sounds Bar in April 1993 and in 1995 they
recorded the debutalbum "Beavershot - Live at Studion2 and released it on their own label.
In 1996 the first studiorecorded record was released - "Feels like Buzz Aldrin". It was recorded in mono at Jo-Allan's Recording Service in Hallstahammar, Västmanland, Sweden. "Feels like Buzz Aldrin" got great reviews; 8 out of 10 in POP Magazine, happy figures and 4 out of 5s and 6 in Dagens Nyheter, SvD, Nöjesguiden etc. It was raised all up to the skies by Per Bjurman at Aftonbladet and Mats Olsson at Expressen.

The later also used Robert as one of the main characters as a rock heroe in his novel "The Lonely Boys2. Later in 1996 after "Feels like Buzz Aldrin" two vinyl 7" were released - "Thrilla in Manilla/Hoss" and in 1997 "Spy Vs Spy/Theme from the Persuaders". Both singles are now released also on CD alltough in other versions.

The third record from Swedens instrumental-trash-kings Robert Johnson And Punchdrunks was released in October 1997 "Aloha from Havana" described as a big step for mankind, a big step from last record "Feels like Buzz Aldrin" and a big step for rockmusic. Also "Aloha from Havana" is recorded at Jo-Allan's Recording Service and of course in mono.

In december 1997 the group played together with bob hund on their "Rock 'n' roll Is Killing Me" tour. bob hund are big admirers of Robert Johnson And Punchdrunks so there was a natural inventation which continued into the studio. Thomas Öberg and Jonas Jonasson did convinced Robert to record the new record in stereo. The two did not only produced the record, they also played bongos and synths. You can listen to the result on, "Fried On The Altar Of Good Taste", which is the groups most exciting record to date. It was released 15th of Mars.The record was then followed by intense touring, playing at festivals such as Hultsfred, Emmaboda, Storsjöyran and several tours in both Denmark and Norway. Punchdrunks toured also in Sweden together with Dipper and First Floor Power. In the fall of -00 Pelle Ögren left the band due to his new job. He was replaced by Kalle Sjöberg. He had already played a few gigs with Punchdrunks. However "Fried" was a big success. The critics loved it and it sold good. The year 2001 started out in the same manor with a tour in Denmark and a performance at the Nomads' 20:th anniversary. Besides this Punchdrunks recorded 2 songs in the Traxton studio. The songs "Groovin With Mr Bloe /Bladerunner" was meant as a single. It was then we got a call from Fredrik Lindström asking us to wright music for his movie "Känd från TV". The summer of 2001 was spent in the Traxton studio with Thomas Öberg and resulted in the album "Cinemascope-A-Dope" released Sept 21:st

Originally formed in the summer of '02, the Reverburritos immediately set out to master a wide variety of classic as well as modern "surf/instro" tunes. Steeping themselves in the music of (among others) The Ventures, The Sandblasters, Satan's Pilgrims, Slacktone, Los Straitjackets, Pollo Del Mar, Link Wray, Dick Dale, Herb Alpert, the Aqua Velvets and Man or Astroman?, the band began to develop it's own brand of reverb-soaked instrumental surf madness. The writing of original material soon followed as the band began to hone new "chops" and gain confidence in their own material. The uniqueness of the Reverburritos sound and choice of material sets them apart from the rap/metal, pop/punk and alt country bands that abound in the local Little Rock music scene.Tim Moritz (guitar) has played in and/or been associated with a variety of musical acts including: the Dirt Clods, Groove Handle, Dr. Demento, G.G. Allin and as a solo singer/songwriter. Bruce Hulsey (bass guitar) has played in such local Arkansas legends as: the Caterwaulers and the Gun Bunnies. Last but not least...Paul Shell (drums) has played with the Dirt Clods, the Meanderthals, Kat Hood and Deja Voodoo locally.The indvidual band member's experiences and cohesiveness as musicians give the Reverburritos!! a clearly singular sound. Dubbed by the Little Rock Free Press as "the tightest 3 piece instumental surf band around", the Reverburritos!! are an enjoyable and fun band to experience. Plus... they rock like a mofo! ...Sunday, September 30, 1995, 3:00 PM: We are sitting at the highway rest stop in Elkhart, Indiana, nursing bad hangovers and cursing our bad luck. Rich’s rusted Pontiac has chugged and sputtered its way to the exit ramp and unceremoniously died on the spot. We had just seen Dick Dale play at the Cubby Bear in Chicago the previous evening (if you haven't seen Dick Dale at the Cubby Bear, you haven't seen Dick Dale).
We are on our way to a show in Cleveland when the car shits the bed. 3:05 PM: Two burning questions are answered: 1) Does God exist? and 2) Does He spend much time in Indiana? Dick Dale’s Winnebago pulls into the rest stop. One of Dick’s roadies sees a concert t-shirt and invites us into the RV for an audience with the King of Surf Guitar. Dick gives us t-shirts, autographed pictures, and complains about the quality of the guacamole in his taco salad. 3:45 PM: Rich decides to abandon his car in Indiana, rent another one, and make the Cleveland show. On the way to the show, it is decided that a surf band is needed. Thus, a surf band is formed. The combo, which now aggressively pushes the boundaries of dangerous surf, consists of Rich (lead guitar), Rick (rhythm guitar), Ben (drums), Caitie (bass), & Mark (vocals).
A lot has happened since the Chicago trip. The Balboas (the name is taken from a town in California that was the home of Dale and one time name of his record company) have logged in hundreds of shows building up a solid repertoire of original surf tunes...with a twist. The band released HEAVY SURF ADVISORY in 1997, and followed it with two east coast tours. HSA received national radio air play, and six tracks from the album were used in surf video soundtracks. In 2000, the bands second CD, A LITTLE BIT OF FEAR, was released on the Burn & Surf label, and supported with tours of the Midwest, East Coast, & Europe. 2002 marked the year of the release of the Balboas first full live recording DUVEL'S ADVOCATE: LIVE FROM EUROPE, and a summer West Coast Tour. In between beer runs, these Sleazefest standouts ('99, 2000, & 2001) have made a name on the international touring circuit, playing with bands such as Dick Dale, Slacktone, Agent Orange, Davie Allen and the Arrows, Southern Culture on the Skids, The Dictators, The Frantic Flatops, The Space Cossacks, The Aqualads, The Surftones, Deadbolt, and Satan's Pilgrims.
The Balboas play with an intensity and recklessness that is missing in many of the new wave of surf bands. Serious grooves occur. No one is spared !!! They are as rough on equipment as they are on eardrums. The Balboas are a powerful combination of musicians dedicated to bustin' sticks, strings, and boards.

The Spotnicks were a Swedish band that became internationally famous in the 1960's with their own brand of instrumental surf-rock, in a way that could be compared to other bands like "The Shadows" from England or "The Ventures" from the USA.The Gothenburg based rockers had their golden years in the early sixties, with four UK Top 50 chart hits in 1962 and 1963 and many popular tours across Europe, the US and Japan. The band has actually neved stopped playing and are still active today, performing mainly in their homeland Sweden.The Spotnicks were famous for wearing spacesuits during their performances and also for their innovative "space sound" which they obtained adding an anti-feedback device and echo machine to their guitars. Since The Spotnicks were created in 1961, the band has released over 700 songs on 42 albums and have sold more than 18 million records.

History

The band's became known due to their stint on the talent show television program, Ebisu-Onsen (which was very similar in concept to the American program, Star Search), on which the winning band would receive a recording contract.
The Surf Coasters had much success on the show, which lead to a loyal fan following. They succeeded to make it into the final round of the competition, where they finished in second place; however, they still received a record deal, which lead to the release of their debut CD, Surf Panic '95, which, despite being an instrumental album, sold well. The band also played that year with surf music legend and "King of the Surf Guitar", Dick Dale, who was on his first tour of Japan. Reportedly, after the tour Dale referred to Naka as the "Prince of the Surf Guitar."
Since then, the band has released upwards of twenty records, for the Columbia, Victor and BMG record labels, and have become number one, Japan-wide, for instrumental bands. Their sound has varied since 1995, including dancehall, acoustic arrangements, blues, ethereal, and heavy metal. Naka has also gone on to record, with and without the rest of the band, on other musical projects, including soundtracks for film and video games.
Though not officially broken up, the band played its last shows together in November 2005. Naka has been performing with an assortment of bands, including Ryouchi Endo and The Southern All Stars. Kurita has been playing bass with his band Chill. Wikipedia

LONGBOARD RANCH is an instrumental SURF band from Los Angeles California. We have a wet reverb sound that's nostalgic from the early 1960s, with influences of western rock, spy music, outer space themes & latin rythyms. The band plays Fender, Mosrite, Wilson Bros. and Phantom guitars through vintage Fender amps. The group performs in the Southern California area around Los Angeles, Orange County and Ventura. We have 2 awesome CDs of original music: Our debut release is Surfin' Out West and our latest disc is Longboard Ranch Rides Again! Each CD contains 22 tracks of all original surf tunes. The Anacondas started out around early 2000. Band members were Messerschmitt Marzl (drums), Jack Stuka (bass, sometimes rythm guitar), Johnny Torpedo (guitar) and Pete Python (flute, synthesizer). We all got this goofy nick names just for fun, and ofcourse it represents our twisted personalities.

Ever since we saw Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" and got blasted away by the opening track "Miserlou" by Dick Dale, we wanted to play kick ass, spaced out, groovy, reverb drenched and heavily surf influenced rock 'n' roll. Since then we did lots of shows in Holland, Germany and the U.S.A. in all kindsa clubs like squats, youth centres, tiki bars, pubs, sex clubs, beach clubs, bigger venues like the Amsterdam based Melkweg and Paradiso; we played at private parties and some underground open air festivals. We played in people's living rooms and back yards... Hell, we would play anywhere our backline would fit in... And we still do.

These Norwegian cats are some tough hombres.

The Pistoleros hail from Norway and announce their arrival in truly stunning style with their version of The Flames' 1963 single Dark Man. If you were checking this CD out before purchase then I guarantee you'd not bother to listen any further than this first track. One play of this richly delivered emotive melody from a talented guitar four-piece and you'd have no choice but to buy the CD, never mind what the rest sounded like! Fortunately there's plenty more where that came from. There are 20 tracks in total, and the quality and blend of material is remarkably strong. Nearly half are sixties covers from Norway and other North European countries, half come from the 1980s Euro RI revival, with '1961' and The Moonriders being major influences, and there's one original: the title track from guitarist Gustav Rosland. Gustav shares the lead duties with Jan Arve Bergane, they split the tracks 50:50 and switch to bass when not playing lead guitar. The sixties covers continue after Dark Man with the sprightly uptempo Domino from The Saunters. Another Norwegian single, this was a latecomer on the scene in 1965 but has all the hallmarks of a pre-beatgroup RI guitar number. Tracks 7 and 8 pair up two more Norwegian sixties singles with Manyana from The Quivers and The Pearls from The Zodiacs. The first is a galloping beater with a relaxing break midway while the second is an exotic flowing ballad with an effective strident break. Also from The Quivers' repertoire comes War Dance with its Apache drums and moody lead delivered with plenty of early Hank B. Marvin feel. The only mainstream sixties tracks are The Fentones' Mexican plus Rocket Man from The Spotnicks. The Eagles' Desperados gets a surprisingly rare airing here for such a great number, and all credit to The Pistoleros for digging it out. The strong list of 1980s covers includes no less than six tunes from Sweden's Clerwall brothers, Lennart and Hans. They're not the obvious titles that so many bands use, but they are just as classy. Take a listen to Rodriquez for example, it's a wonderful early Shadows pastiche that oozes echo and tremolo-inspired emotion. Originally released on a '1961' EP it's just one of many here that fans of '60s UK and Euro instrumentals will love. This is a very high quality CD, don't miss it. (Alan Taylor)
